Wireless Networks
Did you know that many campus buildings have wireless networks? You can access the Internet from anywhere inside the building as long as your laptop is equipped with a wireless card. Use the proper local network name and encryption key (if applicable) which are provided in the table below.
New for 2008-2009
The college is proceeding with expanding the current wireless network across the entire campus. Over the summer wireless access points were installed in all dormitories on campus. During the first few weeks of September access points will be installed in the student houses. Once student houses are connected work will move onto academic and administrative buildings. The expansion of Wheaton's wireless connectivity is made possible by support from John and Adrienne Bevis Mars '58, Life Trustee.
The new equipment is faster, supporting 802.11b/g and 802.11a. It is also more secure. Users of the network named WheatonCollege will be required to register their computer the first time they connect to the wireless network. Once connected users will have the same access as on the wired network.
In Mars, the Library, the Chapel, Watson, the fitness center, and Knapton there is another network named Guest. This network is provided for users who don't have a Wheaton ID number. This provides Internet access ONLY. Users on this network will not be able to access the Wheaton Network or resources located on the Wheaton Network (such as Webmail or Blackboard).
These extra steps are being undertaken to add security and safeguards to the wireless networks on campus. The wireless networks in other buildings on campus will be moved over to this system as the building equipment is replaced as part of normal replacement cycles.
Not sure if your laptop has a wireless card? Having trouble connecting your laptop to the wireless network?
Review the information on this page or contact the Technology Support Center (x3900, support@wheatonma.edu) to ask a question. You can also drop in to the Support Center in Library with your computer Monday-Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm.
