LIGHTING THE WAY: JEFF'S STORY

Physics major Jeff Grassetti '09 knows a thing or two about light. He spent the summer exploring the next generation of lighting technology, light emitting diodes (LEDs). Along with physics professor John Collins, Jeff has been trying to find a material that can be integrated into a LED device that will make them more efficient and produce better light.

LUMINESCENCE AND REFLECTION: "In my research, I shine Ultra Violet light on powder samples and use a spectrometer to determine what portion of the UV light is reflected. This tells me which wavelengths of light the powder absorbs and how the atoms interact with the incoming light. After the power absorbs the light, it then gives off its own light—luminescence. The goal is to find just the right balance for LEDs."

HANDS ON: "I love working with my hands. This research project is an opportunity to work with specialized equipment and advanced technology. There is a sense of accomplishment that goes along with being able to set up and run a spectroscopic apparatus."

COLLABORATION: "Wheaton is working with an impressive team to help with the research—the University of San Diego, OSRAM Sylvania and Boston College. Sylvania is very interested in our results. There is a growing need for energy efficiency and conservation. Reducing electricity use means saving money and leaving behind a smaller carbon footprint. It is rewarding to know my work may contribute to solving a serious environmental problem."
