Culinary champ

The accolades continue to come in for Dennis Leary '92, the chef and owner of the Nob Hill eatery, Canteen, which is located at the Commodore Hotel in San Francisco. The Wheaton alumnus was recently named a "Chef of the Year" by Northside magazine.

Leary, who earned the moniker of being one of the city's culinary "Rising Stars" in 2005, also operates The Sentinel, a tiny breakfast and lunch spot in the city's Financial District.

An English major who graduated Phi Kappa, Leary first made a name for himself at the well-regarded Rubicon.

In less than two years, he was appointed executive chef [of Rubicon]. With a comfortable paycheck, a job at a respected restaurant, and accolades pouring in, Dennis Leary did what any true independent spirit would do – he left it all to open a 20-seat diner....

He and other Wheaton foodies were profiled in the Winter 2006 issue of the Wheaton Quarterly (pdf). At the time, he told the magazine: “The biggest challenge, as in all small businesses, is to provide for the well-being of my staff,” Leary said, “who, incidentally, are some of the most talented cooks and servers in the city, and also keep an eye on the profit-ability of the business.”
