Pakistan unhinged

Posted on October 22, 2008

Wheaton alumnus Thomas Sanderson, an expert on national security, writes in the Washington Times about his recent travel to Pakistan to interview citizens there for a counter-terrorism project on which he is working. During the course of his journey, Sanderson narrowly missed a car bomb that set ablaze the hotel he had left just hours before.

The episode served as dramatic punctuation to a trip in which Sanderson says he realized there "is little real cooperation between Islamabad and Washington against extremists in Pakistan. In its place is a poorly choreographed and ungainly dance that hardly masks the mistrust, convoluted power structures and competing goals that retard the bilateral relationship."
