Deisi Cuate: Suffolk University’s DiscoverLaw.org Plus Program / Global Learning and International Program in Costa Rica
Posted on November 9, 2012
During the month of June 2012, I attended Suffolk University’s DiscoverLaw.org Plus program, where I received a curriculum that covered key principles and history of various types of law, including communication, tort, sexuality, and gender law. I also received insight in law careers through interactions with Boston's legal leaders and commonwealth seminars. I had the opportunity to speak with people such as Judge Rogeriee Thompson who was nominated by Barack Obama, and attend Boston’s Seaport World Trade Center which hosted US Attorney Carmen Ortiz, Attorney General of the United States Eric Himpton Holder, Jr., and Cheryl Brown Henderson. This program provided me intensive classes designed by SU Law School's nationally ranked legal writing, clinical, and trial advocacy faculty, which prepared me to compete in a moot court competition.
I also volunteered through Global Learning, and international program, in Costa Rica during the month of August. I collaborated with public elementary schools in developing provinces to improve students’ learning opportunities by providing special lessons to fill gaps in classroom curricula, and co-taught with fellow volunteer teachers. Not only did I create hands-on, dynamic, and interactive English language lessons through art history lens, but I also taught them at different schools from pre-school to sixth-grade learners.
