H1N1 Flu Update

August 17, 2009
Dear Students,
National and global health experts are concerned about the potential of a new outbreak of H1N1 influenza (previously known as "swine flu") in the coming months. Campus living presents unique risks for communicable diseases. So the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that college students protect themselves by getting vaccinated against the regular seasonal and the H1N1 flu. Getting both vaccinations is a powerful way to protect yourself and the Wheaton community against the flu.
We encourage you to get both vaccinations as soon as they are available to you. Many health providers are receiving seasonal flu vaccination supplies in August. H1N1 vaccinations are expected to be on hand later this fall.
Ask your doctor if the seasonal flu vaccine has arrived. If it is available, we strongly suggest getting vaccinated before you return to campus. As an alternative, Wheaton’s annual seasonal flu vaccination clinic is scheduled for late September. You can pre-register for the Seasonal Flu Clinic on Saturday, August 29, during orientation check-in or during other sign-up sessions in September. There is a charge of $25. You cannot use your insurance for this private clinic. An H1N1 Flu Clinic is scheduled for early November.
For your convenience, we have developed a Student H1N1 Flu Care Sheet to download and reference.

Please take care of yourself and your community.
