UVA Valencia Program

Posted on September 9, 2013

Profile
Wheaton students may develop their Spanish language skills at the University of Virginia Study Center located in one of Spain’s most beautiful cities -- Valencia. Language classes are taught at Intermediate and Advanced levels and students with language proficiency may be able to enroll directly at the Universidad de Valencia.

Location
Valencia (800,000) is located on the east coast of the Iberian Peninsula, and is one of the largest port cities on the Mediterranean Sea. Its rich and diverse history is evidenced in the architectural monuments and buildings of the Old City Center.  Valencia’s regional language, culture and traditions are distinct and come from many sources: founded by the Romans in 138BC, Valencia later became an important center of culture and trade in the world of Arab Spain. In the 13th century, under the Visigoths, Valencia was incorporated into the Kingdom of Aragon and later unified Spain.  Over many centuries through to modern times, Valencia has retained an important influence in the social and political history of Spain.

Valencia enjoys a mild climate, with beautiful beaches, making it a popular vacation destination. Major monuments include the Cathedral of Valencia, the City of Arts and Sciences, a cultural and architectural complex, the Museum of Fine Arts, with works by Velázquez, El Greco, and Goya, as well as the Valencian Institute of Modern Art. The region of Valencia is known as the Orange Blossom Coast.  Its main festival in early March is the Fallas, an event not to be missed. The traditional Spanish dish, paella, originated in Valencia. It is a modern city, with a substantial student population, making for a lively atmosphere and experience. http://www.valencia.es
