Bernadette Houldsworth
Instructor of Hispanic Studies
Degrees
M.A.T., Rhode Island College
B.Sc.Hons. University of Salford U.K.
Main Interests
I hope to instill in my students an appreciation for the Spanish language and the cultures and literatures of the Spanish speaking world. In fact, I strongly believe that it is in the best interest of every citizen and the country itself that we all study and visit other countries in order to have a better appreciation and understanding of other cultures and points of view.
Research Interests
I do not have a particular research field but over the years have enjoyed researching various topics that arise in connection with my teaching, for example, the effects of the Spanish Civil War on children; the disappeared in Argentina.
Teaching Interests
Incorporation of media and different sources of language in and outside the classroom - audio and video tapes, music, poetry, the internet, computer generated language materials etc. Over the years the amount of material available to us has grown immensely, which is wonderful, but it also means that we must be more discerning and careful in our research.
Other Interests
- Faculty advisor to Freshman and Sophomore students. Major advisor in the Hispanic Studies department.
- Web based course and testing materials.
- Advisor for students studying abroad in the PRESHCO (Córdoba, Spain) and PMCSP(Puebla, Mexico) JYA programs.
Student Projects
Most of my work with individual students has been in connection with language technology, web site creation and maintenance, web searches, making CD's etc. I also work with a student assistant who helps with the promotion and organization of the PRESHCO and PMCSP programs.
