Student Alumnae Building Exterior
Completed in 1940, Wheaton’s Student Alumnae Building (SAB) was the first International Style building constructed on a college campus in America. When Wheaton hired Evans in the year following the completion of SAB, the college proudly displayed its endorsement of Modernist style. In his photographs of the building's exterior, Walker Evans emphasizes the Modernist design of SAB through the photographs’ cropped, no-nonsense compositions. SAB was transformed into Balfour-Hood Campus Center in 1986 and so we are fortunate to have Evans' photographs of SAB, which capture the character of the original building so well.
