Professor Mary Lee Griffin

Professor Griffin is one of the founders of Wheaton’s Contemplative Studies Initiative (CSI). In an effort to raise awareness about contemplative studies in higher education, the CSI group of faculty, staff, students, parents, alums and community members has brought two speakers to campus this past year, Dr. Harold Roth, Director of Brown University’s decade long Contemplative Studies Initiative and Sara Lazar, from Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Roth’s lecture, Contemplative Studies in the Liberal Arts, and Dr. Lazar’s lecture, The Impact of Meditation on Cognition, Aging and the Brain were both well-attended and well-received by the campus and wider community. Wheaton’s CSI looks forward to the 2014-15 college year with plans for additional speakers and events, and the development of a minor in contemplative studies. The CSI is also interested in developing contemplative spaces on campus.
