Heidi-Carolyn Bedard '10 spent the summer of 2011 teaching English to school-age children in summer camps throughout Italy as part of a program called Associazione Culturale Linguistica Educational. She reports that the experience expanded her ability to design creative lesson plans in order to bridge the language barrier and reach children at various developmental stages. After returning from Italy, Heidi–Carolyn became the program coordinator for SMILES Mentoring, a school-based mentoring program serving over 400 students in Fall River, Massachusetts. In this role, she creates and implements the program’s literacy curriculum. Her hiring was featured in a SouthCoastToday.com article. She has been drawing upon resources from her Wheaton education courses and advises current students to “keep those notebooks!"
