Procedures for Notetaking Services

Note sharer/taker Accommodations

The purpose of this in class accommodation is to compensate for difficulties in note taking and to supplement the students notes. Students are expected to take their own notes during class, whenever it is feasible.

Having a note sharer/taker as an academic accommodation should not be viewed as a substitute for not attending class or as an excuse for missing class.

Student responsibilities:

  • Note sharer/taker accommodation requests are administered by Dean Wilhelm. The student making the request must submit appropriate documentation of a disability and complete an Accommodation Request Form.
  • The student is encouraged to first attend classes to determine the need for a note sharer/taker.
  • The student requesting the note sharer/taker asks the instructor to identify a student who has demonstrated good note taking skills, or to make a general in-class announcement without identifying the student, to recruit potential note sharers/takers.
  • Once a note sharer/taker is recruited, the student requesting the accommodation must notify Dean Wilhelm and inform the note sharer/taker to report to Dean Wilhelm to complete required paper work.
  • The student informs the note sharer/taker how they want to receive the notes. It is recommended that the note sharer/taker provide students with class notes within 24 hours.
  • The note sharer/taker is not obligated to provide materials from missed classes.

Note sharer/taker responsibilities:

  • Note sharers/takers must meet with Dean Wilhelm and present copies of notes for review and complete required paperwork.
  • Note sharers/takers are responsible for identifying two alternates at the beginning of the semester in the event that they are unable to assist the student.
  • Note sharers/takers must notify the student and the alternate note sharer/taker in the event of being absent from class.
  • Notes are to be delivered directly to the student approved for the service no later than 24 hours after the class meeting.
  • Note taking services are confidential and information about the student should not be divulged.
  • Note sharers/takers who are hired to scribe* for the student are paid as part of their work-study grant and must be on Federal Financial Aid.
  • Note sharers/takers are responsible for any necessary paperwork related to  employment in accordance with Office of Student Financial Assistance in order to be compensated.
*Scribes are note takers who assist students who are physically unable to take notes, quizzes, tests, exams or complete in class assignments.  Note sharers are generally not compensated for sharing notes that they are taking for themselves.
