Geocaris and Teague draw weekly tennis honors from NEWMAC

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College women's tennis standouts Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) each earned weekly league honors, as Geocaris was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Singles Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, September 7, and the sophomore duo was selected as doubles team of the week.

Geocaris is 3-0 this year during singles action, having lost just one total game while going 1-0 in first singles and 2-0 in the second spot. She blanked her foe from Salve Regina University on August 29 before yielding one game to her Simmons College opposition on August 30 after moving up to the first position. Geocaris, who earned weekly honors for her doubles play once as a freshman, shut out her opponent from Gordon College last Wednesday.

As a pairing, Geocaris and Teague are 2-0, with both matches coming at the first position. Against Salve Regina, the duo picked up an 8-2 victory during Wheaton's shutout win before the tandem notched an 8-1 triumph at Gordon. Geocaris is 3-0 overall during doubles play, having competed with another partner during a first-position win, while Teague is 2-0 in singles action, as she has lost only three games during a pair of top-spot sweeps. Teague twice drew NEWMAC honors last year, once apiece for her singles and doubles success.

The Lyons, who are ranked 24th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast poll, are 3-0 this year, having picked up three shutouts. Wheaton faces its toughest test thus far when it travels to Division II Bentley College tomorrow for a 3:30 p.m. match.
