Wheaton corrals second straight 9-0 victory to begin seasonAugust 30, 2008 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis squad notched a 9-0 triumph during its home opener for the second straight season on Saturday at the Clark Tennis Courts, and the Lyons corralled a shutout for the second consecutive day with a win against Simmons College. The Blue and White is now 2-0 for the sixth consecutive season, while the Sharks were playing their first match of the fall. Wheaton yielded a total of eight games during doubles play, as senior Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) and junior Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) earned the most decisive victory with an 8-2 decision in the second position. Sophomore Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and freshman Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, RI/Lincoln School) notched an 8-3 win at number one, while sophomore Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) and freshman Rosalyn Chesky (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) followed suit in the third slot. Geocaris won handily during her first career appearance in the top singles position, as she posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory, while DiOrio dropped just five games at number two. Three of Wheaton's remaining singles players were triumphant in straight sets, but all produced close scores. Knies and senior Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) picked up 6-4, 6-4 wins at three and six, respectively, and Van Faasen fought off freshman Maggie Taylor (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) by a 6-4, 7-5 final in the fourth spot. In the fifth position, Chesky battled to a three-set victory against freshman Liza Pope (Newbury, MA/Pentucket Regional), 6-3, 6-7, 7-6.
