Trio of Wheaton players earn singles victories at NEWITT TournamentOctober 21, 2006 AMHERST, MA- Wheaton College senior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School), junior Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) and sophomore Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) each picked up singles victories at this weekend's New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) at Amherst College. After receiving a bye in the first round of the second singles flight, Weiss blanked Roger Williams University junior Jessica Manners (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow) in the second round before dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision to second-seeded Williams College freshman Grace Baljon (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL). In the fifth singles flight, Milic-Strkalj defeated New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) counterpart and Springfield College junior Jessica Sousa (Falmouth, MA/Quabbin Regional) 6-3, 6-1 in the first round. She then fell to conference foe Andrea Nagy (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich), a Babson College freshman, by a count of 6-1, 6-1. At sixth singles, Farmer knocked off Springfield senior Jenny Cameron (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) 6-3, 6-2 in the opening round but eventually suffered a 6-2, 6-0 setback to Wesleyan University sophomore Alexandra Sirois (Koloa, HI/Kauai). Junior Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and freshman Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) also competed in singles play at the first and fourth positions, respectively. In doubles action, Knies and Weiss sided for an 8-3 loss to a second-seeded Williams tandem in the first flight, while Jackson and Milic-Strkalj were saddled with an 8-1 setback to a fourth-seeded duo from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Farmer and sophomore Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) withdrew from their match in the third doubles flight. Wheaton concludes its fall season by hosting the six-team NEWMAC Tournament next weekend. As the sixth seed, the Lyons take on third-seeded Mount Holyoke College Saturday morning on the Clark Tennis Courts at 9:30 a.m. Wheaton defeated Mount Holyoke, 6-3 on September 30.
