Lyons finish regular season with third straight loss to Babson, 5-4October 14, 2006 BABSON PARK, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team lost its second straight 5-4 decision in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play, with the latest coming at Babson College on Saturday. By finishing their regular season at 7-4 overall and 3-4 in the conference, the Lyons locked up the sixth seed in the NEWMAC Tournament, which Wheaton hosts beginning on Saturday, October 28. The Beavers improved to 5-7 and 3-4, securing the conference tournament's fifth seed. Wheaton fell behind early by dropping two of three doubles matches and was never able to fully recover. Each match was decided by an 8-4 final, as senior Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) and junior Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) combined for the Lyons' lone win at the second position. Babson fielded a pair of victorious teams, as sophomore Courtney Farrell (Burlington, MA/Burlington) and freshman Lorena Becerra (Key Biscayne, FL/Gulliver Prep) won at the top spot, while junior Jamie Burke (Burlington, MA/Burlington) and sophomore Kali Hogan (Clinton, MA/Clinton) triumphed at number three. At the top singles spot, Jackson narrowly fell to Farrell, 6-4 in the first set before succumbing to a sweep with a 6-2 loss, but the remaining five matches were decided rather decisively, as the teams split the six points. Wheaton senior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) earned a 6-0, 6-4 win at number two, McDermott corralled a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the third position, while junior Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) triumphed by a 6-2, 6-1 score in the fifth spot. On the other side, Babson picked up its final two singles victories in a pair of lower positions. Sophomore Heather Walsh (Warwick, RI/The Prout School) notched a 6-0, 6-2 win at four, while freshman Elizabeth Sheerin (Melrose, MA/Melrose) earned a 6-1, 6-3 sixth-spot win. Next weekend, the Lyons are set to compete at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) at Amherst College. The event begins Friday and runs until Sunday.
