Wheaton blanks Rutgers-Newark in women's tennis actionSeptember 3, 2006 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team combined for six straight-set singles victories and dropped only five points during doubles competition en route to a 9-0 win over Rutgers University at Newark on Sunday in Beard Field House. The Lyons are 2-0, while the Scarlet Raiders were opening their season and saw a nine-match win streak come to an end. In doubles play, senior Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) and junior Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) yielded the fewest points during an 8-1 win at number two. Senior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and freshman Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) recorded an 8-2 win at the top position, while sophomores Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) and Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) matched that score at number three. McDermott also recorded the shortest singles match, notching a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number two. Weiss allowed two points at number three, Federico gave up three points in the fifth spot, and junior Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) surrendered four at six. Jackson picked up a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at the top spot, while Knies pulled out a 7-5 win in the first set at number four over sophomore Nicole Rubinetti (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) before using a 6-1 victory in the second game to win her match.
