Wheaton completes fall season with setback in NEWMAC Tournament

WELLESLEY, MA- The number-four seed Wheaton College women's tennis team completed its fall season with a 5-0 setback to fifth-seeded Mount Holyoke College in the opening round of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament Saturday morning at Wellesley College.

The Lyons, who posted a 4-3 league mark during the regular season, fall to 7-6 on the season. Avenging its regular season loss to Wheaton, Mount Holyoke improves to .500 with a mark of 5-5.

Wheaton began play this morning with a pair of 8-5 losses at second and third doubles, respectively, in addition to dropping an 8-4 decision in the top position. Sophomore Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and freshman Meghan Doyle (Hingham, MA/Hingham) sided at second doubles, while junior Eden Gudonis (Manchester, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) and sophomore Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) paired up in the third slot.

Juniors Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) rounded out the doubles tandems with their four-point loss to Mount Holyoke junior Aleksandra Mihailovic (Sibenik, Croatia/Red Cross Nordic UWC) and freshman Angela Horner (Bismarck, ND/Century).

In singles play, Mount Holyoke captured victories the first and third positions to solidify its win, as Weiss lost to Horner in the top spot and Jackson to first-year Ashley Fallon (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield) at number three. Matches with McDermott, Doyle and freshmen Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) and Samantha Schraeter (Rye, NY/Rye) in the remaining four spots did not finish due to the match being played to decision.

The Lyons return to action next spring, which includes the four-team Wheaton Invitational slated for Sunday, April 2. The College of the Holy Cross, Roger Williams University and Salve Regina University are scheduled to return to Norton for the second annual event.
