Bowdoin sweeps Lyons, 9-0 in women's tennis regular season finaleOctober 9, 2005 BRUNSWICK, ME- The Wheaton College women's tennis team concluded its regular season dual match play with a 9-0 loss to host Bowdoin College in a non-conference contest Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Lyons' regular season record stands at 7-5, while the Polar Bears move to 2-2 overall. Bowdoin quickly captured the top two doubles matches by scores of 8-1 and 8-2, respectively, before completing the doubles sweep with a victory in the third position. Wheaton junior Eden Gudonis (Manchester, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) and sophomore Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends‚ Central) gave the hosts their toughest test of the afternoon, playing senior Kara Perriello (Lynnfield, MA/Bishop Fenwick) and first-year Rachel Waldman (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland) to an 8-4 decision. The Polar Bears retained control through singles play with six straight-set victories. Freshman Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) dropped a 6-1, 6-4 final to senior Kristina Sisk (Denver, CO/Colorado Academy) at fifth singles, while Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) had a similar match in the second spot with a 6-4, 6-1 setback to fellow junior Kelsey Hughes (Shelburne, VT/South Burlington). Wheaton will take the week to prepare for next weekend's New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) at Amherst College. The tournament begins on Friday and runs through Sunday.
