Wheaton's Jackson tabbed NEWMAC Singles Player of the WeekOctober 3, 2005
NORTON, MA- Wheaton College women's tennis standout Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) was tabbed New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Singles Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, October 2. The sophomore recorded a pair of victories at number-three singles during the Lyons' 2-0 week, helping Wheaton clinch a playoff berth. She also went 1-1 in doubles play. On Tuesday against Clark University, Jackson breezed through a 6-0, 6-1 match as Wheaton won in a sweep. She earned a tougher point on Saturday at Mount Holyoke College, dropping the first set by a 6-3 score before rallying with 6-0 and 7-6 victories for the win. Jackson was also half of a doubles tandem that took an 8-0 decision at Clark, and she paired with her fifth different doubles partner this season for an 8-4 loss against Mount Holyoke. With an 8-2 singles record this season, including 3-1 since moving up from the fourth to third spot, Jackson holds an 18-9 career mark and has 29 total wins between singles and doubles. The Lyons improved to 6-3 last week, including 3-2 in the NEWMAC. Competing with a roster of just nine players, including no seniors and four freshmen, Wheaton is currently fourth in the eight-team league and already has more league victories than it did a year ago. Jackson and the Lyons travel to NEWMAC foe Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m. match before completing their conference schedule at Smith College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
