Wheaton climbs NEWMAC standings with 6-3 road win at Mount Holyoke

October 1, 2005

SOUTH HADLEY, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team moved into sole possession of fourth place in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) standings following its 6-3 victory at Mount Holyoke College Saturday afternoon. The Lyons raised their overall record to 6-3 with a 3-2 conference mark, while Mount Holyoke slips to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the league.

Wheaton mixed up its doubles lineup to begin play this afternoon, as the top two combinations played together for the first time all season. At number two, junior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and sophomore Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) posted a hard-fought 8-6 victory over Mount Holyoke sophomore Meaghan Sloane (Concord, MA/Lawrence Academy) and freshman Ashley Fallon (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield).

The Lyons picked up their second doubles win in the third position, when junior Eden Gudonis (Manchester, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) and freshman Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) sided for an 8-2 victory. Junior Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) and sophomore Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) rounded out the doubles tandems.

Taking a 2-1 lead into singles play, Wheaton used convincing victories in the fifth and sixth slots combined with come-from-behind three-set winners at three and four to complete the match win. Farmer and first-year Samantha Schraeter (Rye, NY/Rye) won decidedly at fifth and sixth singles, respectively, while Jackson and freshman Meghan Doyle (Hingham, MA/Hingham) grinded out their matches at three and four, respectively. Jackson won 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 and Doyle was victorious 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Wheaton remains on the road this Tuesday for another conference contest at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The match is slated for a 4:00 p.m. start.
