Wellesley sweeps Lyons in Wheaton's regular season home finaleSeptember 20, 2005 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team concluded its home slate Tuesday night in Beard Field House, as the Lyons were swept by Wellesley College, 9-0 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest. Wheaton slips to 4-3 on the season and 1-2 in league play, while Wellesley remains unbeaten with a perfect 4-0 overall and conference record. The visitors registered a pair of 8-2 victories in the top two doubles positions while capturing five straight-set singles wins to complete the sweep. At number-three doubles, Wellesley sophomore Jenny Kendall (Auburn, ME/North Yarmouth Academy) and freshman Jennifer Schwartzkopf (Hinsdale, IL/Hinsdale Central) defeated Wheaton junior Eden Gudonis (Manchester, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) and sophomore Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School), 8-5. Schwartzkopf and Lyons' freshman Meghan Doyle (Hingham, MA/Hingham) were involved in the lone three-set singles match, with Doyle taking the first set, 6-3. Schwartzkopf posted a 6-4 decision in the second set before finishing the match with a 10-5 result in the super tiebreaker. Kendall defeated Wheaton first-year Samantha Schraeter (Rye, NY/Rye), 6-1, 6-1 at number-five singles and Wellesley's Jenna Mezin (Maui, HI/Seabury Hall), Trish Devine (Westport, MA/Wheeler School), Hali Walther (Sammamish, WA/Eastlake) and Alex Lucas (Leawood, KS/Notre Dame de Sion) were victorious in the first, second, third and sixth positions, respectively, to round out the scoring. The Lyons break from dual match play this weekend and travel to Brunswick, Maine, to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament hosted by Bowdoin College.
