Wheaton cruises past Springfield, 9-0 for first NEWMAC win of seasonSeptember 17, 2005 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team had little difficulty picking up its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory of the season Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons cruised past Springfield College, 9-0 at Clark Tennis Courts. Wheaton evens its conference mark at 1-1 while improving its overall record to 4-2, while the Pride moves to 1-3 on the season and 1-2 in league play. Juniors Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) set the pace in doubles play, downing junior Meghan Kelly (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) and freshman Melissa Weinstein (Allentown, PA/Perkiomen), 8-1. Second and third doubles ended with 8-4 finals in favor of the home team, as junior Eden Gudonis (Manchester, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) and sophomore Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) won in the number-two slot while sophomore Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) and freshman Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) captured the third position. Jackson and first-year Meghan Doyle (Hingham, MA/Hingham) led the pack in the singles portion of the match, combining to limit their opponents to three points in the third and fourth spots, respectively. Weiss, McDermott, Jackson, freshman Samantha Schraeter (Rye, NY/Rye) and Milic-Strkalj all blanked the opposition in their second sets to complete the sweep. The Lyons are slated to play in their final home match of the season on Tuesday, when they face conference foe Wellesley College at 4:00 p.m. Following the Wellesley match, Wheaton hits the road for five dual matches and three tournaments to complete its fall season.
