Sarah Madeira tabbed to NEWMAC Academic All-Conference teamFebruary 1, 2005 NORTON, MA- A total of 10 Wheaton College student-athletes were named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Academic All-Conference team for the fall of 2004. Honorees for the award must maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or better upon completion of the 2004 spring semester, attain at least a sophomore year standing and be a competing member of a varsity team for the entire season. The Lyons were led by the women's soccer program with three recipients, including three-time award winning seniors Carolyn Wills (Salt Lake City, UT/East) and Christy Schneider (Jonesboro, GA/Jonesboro). Junior Emily Lipsky (Whitestone, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) picked up her second Academic All-Conference nod. Wills, a 2005 recipient of the Rhodes Scholarship, has accumulated a near perfect 3.98 grade-point average and is striving towards a philosophy degree. Schneider has collected a 3.75 GPA to date and is completing her studies in studio art, while Lipsky is a chemistry major with a cumulative GPA of 3.67. In addition to their academic success, the three helped propel Wheaton to its first NCAA Final Four appearance and finished the season with a 23-1-2 record. The NEWMAC champion women's cross country team boasted two recipients for the fall award, junior Kendra Leith (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) and sophomore Jennifer Ziello (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield). Leith has captured a sparkling GPA of 3.96 in studying economics, while Ziello, a biology major, has collected a GPA of 3.68. The two runners played an intricate part in capturing the Lyons' first conference championship, with Leith and Ziello finishing fifth and 30th, respectively, out of 133 competitors at the NEWMAC Championship. Leith also earned NEWMAC All-Conference honors. Both the volleyball and field hockey teams captured two honors each, including junior Carilyn Tately (Walpole, MA/Walpole) and sophomore Ashley Emerson (Ashford, CT/E.O. Smith) for volleyball and juniors Leigh-Anne Cioffredi (Lebanon, NH/Lebanon) and Elizabeth Rowland (Holliston, MA/Holliston) for field hockey. Selected to the team for the first time, Tately and Emerson helped Wheaton to a 13-15 record while recording grade-point averages of 3.83 and 3.70, respectively. Tately is majoring in sociology and Emerson is working towards a double major in English and political science. Cioffredi, a mathematics major, has collected a 3.63 GPA, while Rowland, a STX/NFHCA All-New England first-team honoree, has a 3.50 grade-point average in her quest for a degree in English. Women's tennis rounds out the Academic All-Conference squad with the selection of sophomore Sarah Madeira (Southwest Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island). Madeira, striving for a degree in studio art, has earned a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 while playing her part in Wheaton's 7-7 record and NEWMAC Tournament semifinal round finish in the fall. Fall sports sponsored by the NEWMAC include: men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's and women's soccer, women's tennis and women's volleyball. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
