Lyon women split to move to 11-3, men fall twice against NESCAC foes

January 19, 2008

HARTFORD, CT- The Wheaton College women's swimming and diving team split a pair of decisions on Saturday at Trinity College's natatorium to move to 11-3 for the third straight season, while the Lyon men lost twice during a double-dual meet against New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foes. Wheaton's women downed the host Bantams, 212-87 but fell to Connecticut College, 165-134. The Blue and White men, now 4-8, lost to the Camels, 162-78 and succumbed to Trinity, 158-119.

Senior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) played a hand in four wins, as the Lyon women won seven of the 14 swimming events. Pratt paced the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races in 25.07 and 55.26, respectively, and also topped the 100-yard backstroke competition in 1:01.99. For the final event of the meet, Pratt swam leadoff for the victorious 200-yard free relay foursome, joining classmate Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and freshmen Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) for a time of 1:42.10.

Sophomore Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) was nearly as successful as Pratt, winning a pair of individual races and pushing a relay team to victory. Sweatt bested the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke fields in 1:10.20 and 2:34.05, respectively, and swam for the top 200-yard medley relay quartet, which was comprised solely of underclassmen. Sweatt, Zais, sophomore Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) finished in a time of 1:53.87.

Wheaton's men notched four runner-up showings, including two by senior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth). Jordan fell just 0.14 seconds short of the top finisher in the 100-yard backstroke after clocking in at 54.21, and he also placed second during the 100-yard butterfly. Classmate Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) was the runner up in the 100-yard breaststroke, while freshman Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) earned second-place honors in the 200-yard fly.

Both Lyon teams return to action on Saturday with a home dual meet against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Babson College at 1:00 p.m. in Balfour Natatorium.
