Women stretch win streak to six with victory at Brandeis, men fall to Judges

January 17, 2008

WALTHAM, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams split their dual meet with Brandeis University Thursday night at Linsey Pool. The Lyon women stretched their winning streak to six with a 164-134 triumph and improved to 10-2 for the second straight season, while the men suffered a 136-108 setback to fall to 4-6. The Judge men are now 3-3 on the season, while the women slipped to 1-5.

The women captured seven event titles, using a balanced effort to overtake the Judges. Six different swimmers recorded individual wins in addition to one relay, as sophomore Sarah Houlihan (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) was the lone Lyon to record multiple victories. Houlihan topped the 500-yard freestyle field and swam a leg on the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay team, joining freshmen Kathleen Dwyer (Barrington, RI/Barrington), Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) and Sara Hollar (La Crescenta, CA/Flintridge Prep).

Senior captains Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) picked up wins in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke races, respectively. Junior Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) captured the 200-yard backstroke, sophomore Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) bested the field in the 100-yard breaststroke and freshman Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) was the top swimmer in the 50-yard freestyle.

Senior Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) led the men's team with a hand in four event titles, showing his versatility by swimming to victory in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard backstroke races while swimming legs on the winning 400-yard freestyle and medley relay teams.

The same quartet comprised both relays, as Hurley sided with senior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) and first-year athletes Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, CT/Xavier) and Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John's Prep). Jordan captured Wheaton's fifth win with the top time in the 50-yard freestyle.

The Lyons stay on the road this Saturday afternoon for a double-dual meet against Connecticut College and host Trinity College. Action from Hartford is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
