Wheaton teams combine for five wins, sweep multi-school meetsJanuary 12, 2008 WELLESLEY, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams each swept their respective meets at Wellesley College's Chandler Pool on Saturday, as the men won twice during a double-dual with Clark University and Vassar College, while the Lyon women downed Clark, Vassar and the host Blue in a triple-dual meet. Wheaton's men are 4-5, while the women improved to 9-2. On the men's side, the Lyons knocked off Clark, 160-89 and Vassar, 156-128. Wheaton's women defeated Clark, 199-94, Vassar by a 193-96 count and Wellesley, 154-110. Wheaton won 11 of the 14 men's swimming events, as freshman Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, CT/Xavier) played a hand in four. Dean-Lee won the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles in 5:11.07 and 10:50.79, respectively, and helped the 200-yard medley and 400-yard free relay foursomes to triumphs. Dean-Lee anchored the 200-yard medley quartet, which clocked in at 1:41.56, and was joined by seniors Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) and Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) and freshman Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood). The 400-yard freestyle relay squad, for which Dean-Lee swam leadoff, was also comprised of first-years Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro), Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John's Prep) and Ben Sabol (Saint Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Prep) and finished in 3:29.56. In addition to helping a relay team win, Gillie, Hurley and Jordan each paced the field in a pair of individual events. Gillie was the fastest 100- and 200-yard freestyle swimmer in times of 51.96 and 1:53.22, respectively, while Hurley won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.12 and the 200-yard breast with a 2:20.41 showing. Jordan topped all 100-yard backstroke competitors at 55.30, while his 54.93 in the 100-yard butterfly pushed him to victory. Fichman-Klein also won the 50-yard free in 23.34. Wheaton's women won eight of the 14 swimming events, as senior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) had a role in half of the victories. Pratt captured the 50-yard freestyle in 24.49, coming within 0.03 seconds of a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championship, and topped the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard free fields in 1:00.93 and 53.86, respectively. Pratt also anchored the winning 400-yard free relay quartet, which finished in 3:45.17 and was also comprised of senior Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury), sophomore Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional). Meehan and Zais joined sophomore Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) and freshman Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) on the winning 200-yard medley relay team, which had a time of 1:53.53. Piscetta also won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.91 and the 200-yard individual medley in 2:17.44, while Sweatt topped all 100-yard breaststroke competitors with a time of 1:10.55.
