Women place third as Wheaton teams compete at MIT Invitational

December 1, 2007

CAMBRIDGE, MA- Six top-three event finishes pushed the Wheaton College women's swimming and diving team to a third-place showing over the weekend among six schools at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Invitational, as the two-day event came to a close on Saturday in Zesiger Pool. The Lyon men placed sixth during the weekend competition.

Wheaton's women's squad totaled 558.5 points, edging out fourth-place Bowdoin College by 0.50 points. The Blue and White men had 216 points, falling 23.5 short of Bowdoin for fifth. MIT won both the men's and women's meets with 1,082.5 and 910.5 points, respectively.

In the women's 400-yard medley relay event, the Lyons' top foursome picked up Wheaton's lone event victory during the weekend. Senior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose), sophomores Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering), and freshman Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) combined for a time of 4:07.72.

Pratt also placed second in the 100-yard backstroke and fourth in each the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, while Sweatt was the runner up in the 100-yard breaststroke and came in fifth during the 200-yard breast. Piscetta was also fifth in both the 50-yard free and 100-yard butterfly races. The trio joined Meehan on the third-place 200-yard medley relay team.

Piscetta, Pratt and freshmen Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) combined for a third-place showing in the 400-yard freestyle relay, while Piscetta and Pratt also helped the 800-yard freestyle relay squad come in fifth. Freshman Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) came in third during the 200-yard breaststroke competition.

Senior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) played a hand in a trio of highlights for the men, with his third-place showing in the 100-yard backstroke the highest for the Lyons during the weekend. He also helped the 200-yard medley relay team finish fifth, joining classmate Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) and freshmen Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) and Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John's Prep), while coming in sixth during the 100-yard freestyle.

Wheaton's teams return to action next Saturday when they host MIT and Smith College in Balfour Natatorium at 1:00 p.m. The competition is one of just 15 this semester from across the NCAA's three divisions selected as a SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Dual Meet of the Week. The Web site will promote next weekend's event by producing a preview and recap to create additional exposure for the competition.
