Roberts's two NCAA times, Pratt's four wins highlight double-dual meetJanuary 27, 2007 MEDFORD, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded their dual meet seasons on Saturday at Tufts University's Hamilton Pool with a double-dual meet against New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foes Tufts and Bates College. Senior All-American Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) highlighted the day by reaching a pair of NCAA Championship provisional times. The Lyon women split, defeating Bates by a 192-106 final but narrowly losing to Tufts, 159-141, and finishing their most successful season at 14-4. Wheaton's men lost a close decision to Bates, 123-115 before falling to the hosts, 170-86 and moving to 5-11. Tufts also beat Bates, 188-84 on the men's side and 206-92 on the women's. Wheaton's women picked up six event victories, as junior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) played a hand in four while pacing the 50- and 100-yard freestyle fields and continuing her assault on the school's record book. Her 50 time of 24.72 was 0.13 seconds off her own program mark and 0.24 ticks shy of an NCAA meet provisional standard, while her 100 time of 54.24 was 0.24 seconds short of her school mark. Junior Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) won the 200-yard freestyle race in 2:02.93, while freshman Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) topped the 200-yard breaststroke competition in a time of 2:32.95. Sweatt finished 1.84 seconds ahead of the second-place swimmer in the 200 and was the runner up in the 100-yard breast. Pratt, Sweatt, sophomore Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) and freshman Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) combined for a 400-yard medley relay victory in 4:10.57. The foursome was 8.21 seconds ahead of the second-place quartet, the widest margin among the top six teams. During the 200-yard freestyle relay competition, Meehan, Miller, Pratt and freshman Brenna Crothers (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) won in 1:41.66 by 0.45 seconds over the next foursome. Meehan came up with a second-place showing in the 100-yard backstroke, as her time of 1:02.82 was just 0.41 seconds off the pace. Freshman Stephanie Conelias (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) picked up two runner-up finishes, as her 100-yard butterfly time of 1:04.05 left her 0.20 ticks back, and her 200-yard fly finish in 2:21.24 was 0.10 seconds behind the winner. Roberts picked up three wins for the men. His 50-yard freestyle victory came in 20.89, which was not only an NCAA provisional time but just 0.20 seconds off an automatic qualifying standard. Roberts's 100-yard free triumph came in 46.66, which matched the provisional time and was 1.45 seconds faster than the runner up. He also won the 100-yard butterfly in 55.31. Junior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:06.89, eclipsing the runner up by 1.08 seconds, and picked up two second-place showings. His 100-yard back time of 54.73 was 0.17 ticks off the pace, and he placed behind only Roberts in the 100-yard butterfly. Senior Zach Hicks (Bath, ME/Morse) was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle, while Hicks, Jordan and Roberts joined junior Yunuscan Tokcan (Providence, RI/Northfield Mount Hermon School) on the second-place 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay teams. The Lyons gear up for the conference championship by completing their regular season slate next Saturday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Invitational at 1:00 p.m. Wheaton's women travel to Wellesley College on February 16-18 for the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship, while the men host the meet on February 23-25 in Balfour Natatorium.
