Lyon women enjoy school-record 13th victory with road win at Bentley, Roberts posts three event triumphs and one program mark for menJanuary 20, 2007 WALTHAM, MA- For the third consecutive year, the Wheaton College women's swimming and diving team set a program wins record, as the Lyons enjoyed their 13th victory of the season following a 159-135 triumph Saturday afternoon at Bentley College. Improving to 13-3 overall, Wheaton finished with 12 wins in 2005-06 and 10 victories in 2004-05. The Lyon men fell to the Falcons, 123-91, bringing their season record to 5-9. Junior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) took part in a team-best four wins on the afternoon, including posting individual victories in the 50-yard butterfly and 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. Her times were 27.77, 25.14 and 55.29, respectively. She also joined sophomore Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) and freshmen Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) on the winning 200-yard medley relay, as the foursome fell just 0.50 seconds short of the 2005 school mark by finishing in 1:54.00. Sweatt had a hand in three first-place finishes, as she swept the 50- and 200-yard breaststroke events. Her 50 time of 32.08 was a mere 0.02 ticks off her own program record, while her 200 finish of 2:33.64 was 4.56 seconds faster than the closest competitor. Meehan, who was victorious in the 50-yard backstroke in 29.48, sided with Glover, junior Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and freshman Brenna Crothers (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) on the top 200-yard freestyle relay team, finishing in 1:45.13. Rounding out the women's event victories were Miller in the 200-yard freestyle, first-year Stephanie Conelias (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) in the 200-yard butterfly and classmate Sarah Houlihan (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) in the 500-yard free. The times were 2:04.16 for Miller, 2:22.05 for Conelias and 5:32.88 for Houlihan, as the Lyons completed their successful day with 11 event wins. For the men, senior All-American Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) highlighted the meet with three event wins, two NCAA Championship provisional qualifying standards and a school record in the 50-yard butterfly. Formerly held by two Wheaton swimmers from the 1993-94 and 2002-03 seasons, the fly mark of 24.42 was bested by Roberts's time of 23.86 this afternoon. Roberts now owns four individual program standards while playing a part in four relay marks. Roberts also won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events, besting the competition with national meet provisional times of 21.01 and 46.55, respectively. Junior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) collected Wheaton's fourth triumph of the day by capturing the top time of 25.62 during the 50-yard backstroke event. Jordan, Roberts, senior Zach Hicks (Bath, ME/Morse) and junior Yunuscan Tokcan (Providence, RI/Northfield Mount Hermon School) took second in the 200-yard medley relay, as did Hicks in the 200-yard individual medley and 1,000-yard free, and Jordan in the 50-yard butterfly and 200-yard back. Jordan, Roberts, Tokcan and freshman John Ahern (Boxboro, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
