Swim teams split with Brandeis, women push winning streak to five

January 11, 2007

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams split their final regular season home meets against Brandeis University Thursday night in Balfour Natatorium. The women pushed their winning streak to five, improving their record to 10-2 thanks to a 167-118 victory, while the men suffered a 115-77 loss to fall to 4-6 overall.

Collecting double-figure wins for the third successive season, the Lyon women benefited from sweeping each of the 14 swimming events. Ten different swimmers picked up individual-event victories, led by three from junior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose), who was victorious in the 50- and 200-yard freestyles and the 100-yard butterfly. She swam 24.94 and 2:03.41 in the free events, respectively, while besting the field in the fly at 1:02.32.

Pratt also led off the top 400-yard free relay, joining junior Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and freshmen Brenna Crothers (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) for a 3:48.83 finish. Meehan, who was triumphant in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:17.55, swam a leg on the winning 400-yard medley quartet, as she, sophomore Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) and freshmen Stephanie Conelias (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) and Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) posted a time of 4:16.99.

Glover, Miller and Sweatt also placed first in the 100-yard backstroke, freestyle and breaststroke events, respectively, in 1:04.39, 56.82 and 1:10.17. Rounding out the upperclassman wins were senior Cassie Bohn (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:34.66 and classmate Colleen Smith (Milford, CT/Lauralton Hall) in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:23.30. Other victories came from sophomore Mandy Cumings (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville Community) in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:22.79 and classmate Casey Shanley (Rumson, NJ/Suffield Academy) in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:31.19. First-year Sarah Houlihan's (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) time of 11:02.87 in the 1,000-yard free fell just 3.84 seconds shy of an eight-year-old school record.

On the men's side, senior All-American Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) highlighted the evening with a trio of event wins, capturing the 50- and 100-yard freestyles and the 100-yard backstroke. He went 21.98 in the 50 free, 47.92 in the 100 free and 56.51 in the 100 back.

Roberts also swam the third leg on Wheaton's second-place 400-yard freestyle and medley relay teams. The 400-yard medley was comprised of Roberts, senior Zach Hicks (Bath, ME/Morse) and juniors Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) and Yunuscan Tokcan (Providence, RI/Northfield Mount Hermon School), while the 400-yard free foursome was Jordan, Roberts, Tokcan and freshman John Ahern (Boxboro, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional). Hicks also took second in the 100-yard breaststroke event.

The Lyons make a return to New London, Connecticut, Saturday afternoon with a double-dual meet against host Connecticut College and Trinity College beginning at 12:30 p.m. The Wheaton teams competed at Connecticut College's two-day Camel Invitational in early December.
