Wheaton's Meehan and Roberts draw weekly ECAC swimming accolades

January 10, 2007

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving standouts Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) each earned Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Swimmer-of-the-Week honors for the week ending on Sunday, January 7. It marked the second straight week of voting in which Roberts nabbed the accolade, as he also drew the award on December 11.

Meehan, a freshman who corralled her initial ECAC nod, helped the Lyons win twice on Saturday, as Wheaton defeated Wellesley College for the first time in program history. She won both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, first taking the 100 back competition in 1:03.56, which was 1.15 seconds ahead of her closest competitor and 2.53 ticks in front of the nearest swimmer from an opposing team. In the 200 back, her time of 2:18.23 was 3.83 seconds better than the second-place finisher and 4.74 ticks ahead of the next competitor from an opposing team. Meehan also swam the third leg for the victorious 200-yard medley relay quartet, whose time of 1:53.66 won by 2.69 seconds and was just 0.16 ticks off a school record.

Roberts, a senior All-American, led the Lyon men with victories in the 50- and 200-yard freestyles against the United States Coast Guard Academy on Saturday. Roberts took the 50 free crown by turning in an NCAA Championship provisional qualifying time of 21.05, winning by 1.32 seconds over his closest competitor. He turned back the 200 free field in 1:45.37, outdistancing the second-place finisher by 4.06 ticks. Roberts also swam for the second-place 200-yard medley relay quartet, which was 1.99 seconds out of first place, while helping the 400-yard freestyle relay team to a third-place showing.

The Wheaton women have a 9-2 dual record with seven more chances to tie the school mark of 12 wins, which was set last year. The Lyon men are 4-5, and both squads hit the Balfour Natatorium pool tomorrow against Brandeis University at 4:00 p.m. in their home finales.
