Wheaton women's swimming downs NEWMAC pair, moves to 9-2January 6, 2007 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's swimming and diving team celebrated Senior Day with a pair of convincing victories over United States Coast Guard Academy and Wellesley College, while the Lyon men fell to four-time New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) champion Coast Guard on Saturday in Balfour Natatorium. Wheaton's women improved to 9-2, while the men are 4-5. The Lyon women downed Coast Guard, 216-73 and defeated Wellesley, 171-128 during a double-dual meet, picking up the first victory over the Blue in program history. Wellesley also knocked off the Bears, 207-89, while Coast Guard was triumphant, 134-67 over the hosts on the men's side. In women's action, Wheaton captured nine of the 14 swimming events. Junior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) and freshmen Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) each were part of three victories. In the first event of the meet, the trio joined freshman Aurelie Marcotte (Hampden, MA/Minnechaug Regional) in winning the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:53.66, which was 2.69 seconds faster than the second-place team and just 0.16 ticks off the school record. Meehan came out on top in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events in times of 1:03.56 and 2:18.23, respectively, while Sweatt topped the 100-yard breaststroke field in 1:10.58 while winning the 200-yard breast in 2:32.25, just 0.75 seconds off her own school record. Pratt notched a first-place showing in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.21 while helping the 400-yard freestyle relay team to the top spot in 3:45.86, as she joined junior Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury), sophomore Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) and freshman Brenna Crothers (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) in victory. Freshman Sarah Houlihan (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) tacked on a pair of individual wins, topping the 500-yard freestyle competitors in 5:27.28, winning by 5.73 seconds, and taking the 1,000-yard free race in 11:12.57. Senior All-American Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) led the Lyon men with victories in the 50- and 200-yard freestyles. Roberts took the 50 free crown by turning in an NCAA Championship provisional qualifying time of 21.05, winning by 1.32 seconds over his closest competitor. He turned back the 200 free field in 1:45.37, outdistancing the second-place finisher by 4.06 ticks. Roberts also swam on the second-place 200-yard medley relay team, joining senior Zach Hicks (Bath, ME/Morse) and juniors Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) and Yunuscan Tokcan (Providence, RI/Northfield Mount Hermon School) in coming within 1.99 seconds of first. The quartet was also third in the 400-yard freestyle relay, while Jordan turned in a third-place showing in the 100-yard backstroke and Hicks was third in the 1,000-yard free.
