Lyons earn six swimming and diving event victories at Camel Invitational

December 3, 2006

NEW LONDON, CT- Athletes from the Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined for six event victories during the two-day Camel Invitational, hosted by Connecticut College in Lott Natatorium on Saturday and Sunday.

With 442 points, the Lyon women placed third out of six teams after turning in a fifth-place showing last year. Wheaton's men recorded 291 points and placed fourth out of four teams. The United States Coast Guard Academy men and Connecticut College women earned the team titles with 867 and 714 points, respectively.

Freshman Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) highlighted Wheaton's women's events by earning a 50-yard breaststroke win in a time of 32.22, breaking her own school record by 0.23 seconds. Junior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) chalked up an impressive margin of victory during the 50-yard butterfly, clocking in at 27.56, which was 0.62 ticks ahead of the second-place finisher, good for the largest disparity between consecutive finishers in the 30-swimmer field. Pratt also came within 0.06 seconds of her own school record. Sophomore Stacy Zickl (Wrentham, MA/King Philip Regional) pulled out a triumph in the one-meter dive, earning 203.85 points to outdistance the runner up by 1.55 points.

In the 200-yard medley relay, Pratt, Sweatt, junior Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and freshman Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) combined for a time of 1:54.33 during their victory.

The Wheaton women also turned in four second-place showings, including a pair by Pratt in the 100-yard butterfly and freestyle events. Sweatt was second in the 100-yard breaststroke, in which she missed her own school mark by 0.02 seconds, while the 400-yard medley relay quartet comprised of the same four that won the 200-yard medley relay finished 0.46 ticks out of first.

Senior All-American Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) paced the Lyon men with a pair of freestyle victories. Roberts swam the 100-yard free in 47.23, finishing 1.26 seconds ahead of the next finisher, while completing the 50-yard free in 21.38. Junior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) recorded the Blue and White's lone runner-up finish during the 50-yard backstroke.

Wheaton's teams return to action next Saturday at New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at 1:00 p.m. The Lyon women also oppose Smith College during a double-dual meet.
