Lyons fall to conference foe Springfield in dual swim meet, Sweatt breaks pair of school breaststroke recordsNovember 18, 2006 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams each fell to visiting New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Springfield College during Saturday afternoon's dual meet in Balfour Natatorium. Falling to 4-3 on the season, the men dropped a 163-103 decision, while the women suffered a 174-125 setback to move to 5-2 overall. The Wheaton women collected a trio of event victories, while freshman Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) broke a pair of program breaststroke records in the 100- and 200-yard events. Sweatt beat her own 100 mark by 0.20 seconds in a time of 1:09.98, good for second place in today's meet, and captured the 200 standard in 2:32.96, just 1.27 seconds behind the top finisher. Sweatt now owns the school marks in each the 50-, 100- and 200-yard breast events. Junior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) was Wheaton's lone double-winner with a pair of victories in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle events. Pratt finished 1:01.37 in the 100 fly after besting a teammate by 2.70 seconds in the 100 free with a time of 54.38. The Lyon women's 200-yard medley relay team was also victorious, as Sweatt, junior Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and a pair of freshmen in Aurelie Marcotte (Hampden, MA/Minnechaug Regional) and Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) combined for a 1:54.54 time. For the men, senior All-American Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) picked up a victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.94. Roberts placed second in the 200-yard free while swimming legs on the runner-up 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay teams. Joining Roberts in both races were junior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth), sophomore T.J. Sponzo (Simsbury, CT/Avon Old Farms) and freshman Max Polin (Parkland, FL/North Broward School). Rounding out Wheaton's second-place finishers were Jordan in the 100-yard backstroke, Polin in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly, junior Joe Fowler (Farmington, ME/Mount Blue) in the 200-yard individual medley, and classmate Ryan Patch (Lexington, MA/Lexington) in the 1,000-yard freestyle. The Lyons will take a couple of weeks off and return to action at the two-day Connecticut College Invitational beginning on Saturday, December 2 at 11:00 a.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
