Four Wheaton women's swimmers named to NEWMAC Academic All-Conference teamMarch 2, 2006 NORTON, MA- Seven Wheaton College student-athletes were named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Academic All-Conference team for the winter of 2005-06. From the NEWMAC's 10 member schools, 86 student-athletes received this honor. Student-athletes receiving the award must maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or better upon completion of the 2005 fall semester, attain at least a sophomore year standing and be a competing member of a varsity team for the entire season. Six academic all-conference honorees swam for Wheaton this winter, with four coming on the women's side and two men receiving notice. Senior Maura Huntington (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield), juniors Kristen Behrens (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and Cassie Bohn (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa), and sophomore Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) paced the Wheaton women to a 12-4 dual record, the single-season program mark for wins and a fourth-place finish at the NEWMAC Championship meet. With this award, Huntington received NEWMAC Academic All-Conference nods all three years she was eligible for the honor, while Behrens and Bohn are second-time qualifiers. It was the first academic citation for Pratt, who played a hand in six school records this season after earning all-conference honors as a freshman. For the men, junior Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) and sophomore Ryan Patch (Lexington, MA/Lexington) each received accolades after helping the Lyons go 11-3 during the regular season, setting a program record for wins in the process, before taking fourth at the NEWMAC Championship. The academic all-conference honor is the second for Roberts and the first for Patch. Roberts, the NEWMAC Men's Swimmer of the Year and three-event all-conference honoree during last weekend's league championship meet, was part of six program standards this winter and will compete later this month at his second consecutive NCAA Division III Championship. Last winter, Roberts attained All-America status at the meet. Senior Ben Davis (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional), a men's basketball tri-captain, rounds out Wheaton's academic all-conference contingent. The honor is the first for Davis, who has appeared in 33 games as a four-year member of the hoops squad. During his career, he has helped the Lyons post a 74-41 mark while advancing to a trio of NEWMAC Tournament semifinal games and one conference championship contest. The Blue and White has also qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament each season during Davis's career, winning last year's title. Wheaton continues defense of that championship Friday against MIT. Winter sports sponsored by the NEWMAC include men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's swimming and diving.
