Wheaton men set season wins mark following sweep of Connecticut College and Trinity, women tie program mark with splitJanuary 14, 2006 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams enjoyed a historic afternoon at Balfour Natatorium Saturday, as the Lyon men set the season wins record following victories over Connecticut College and Trinity College. The women tied the program mark with their winning decision against Trinity. Improving to 9-2 on the season, the men surpassed the eight wins from the 2004-05 season with a 158-110 final over Connecticut College and 165-124 decision against Trinity. Connecticut College defeated Trinity, 152-130 in today's double-dual meet action. The Wheaton women moved to 10-3 on the season, tying last year's win total, after beating Trinity, 154-140. The Lyons fell to Connecticut College, 156-105, while Connecticut College completed its sweep with a 168-125 result against Trinity. Junior All-American Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) paced the men with multiple-event victories in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle events while swimming a leg on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team. Sophomore Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) swept the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events and junior Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) won the 200-yard individual medley, while both swam a leg on the top 200-yard medley relay team. Roberts joined sophomore Ryan Patch (Lexington, MA/Lexington) and first-year athletes Chris Romilly (Washington, DC/Saint Albans) and T.J. Sponzo (Simsbury, CT/Avon Old Farms) on the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay team, outdistancing the competition by 8.14 seconds. Romilly and Sponzo also sided with Hurley and Jordan during the 200-yard medley relay race, capturing the meet's fastest time by 1.39 seconds. For the women, sophomore Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) gave the Lyons critical points with a pair of triumphs in the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly events. Freshman Mandy Cumings (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville Community) finished strong to secure the top mark in the 200-yard individual medley, while classmate Casey Shanley (Rumson, NJ/Suffield Academy) captured the 1650-yard freestyle event, defeating the next closest competitor by 2.61 seconds. The Lyons will take the week off from competition and return to the pool next Saturday afternoon with a home dual meet against Division II Bentley College.
