Lyons suffer first defeats in men's and women's swimming and divingNovember 19, 2005 SPRINGFIELD, MA- Wheaton College's men's and women's swimming and diving teams each suffered their first defeats of the 2005-06 season on Saturday, falling at New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Springfield College. The Lyon men fell, 140-105, while the women dropped a 155-103 decision. Each Wheaton squad is now 6-1. In men's action, sophomore Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) took home a pair of individual victories while swimming on a victorious relay team. Jordan finished first in the 100-yard backstroke, outdistancing the second-place swimmer by 10.12 seconds, before swimming the 100-yard butterfly in 56.50. Jordan, juniors Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) and Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering), and freshman Chris Romilly (Washington, DC/Saint Albans) combined for a time of 1:29.42 in winning the 200-yard freestyle relay. Hurley also took home first in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:22.47, 9.48 seconds ahead of the next finisher. Sophomore Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) led the women with a pair of victories, swimming the 100-yard butterfly in 1:04.42 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:19.01. Freshman Kelly Grant (South Salem, NY/John Jay) won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:44.71.
