Pair of 5-0 starts for swim teams marks first in program history, Lyons sweep Babson and WPI in double-dual meet

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams raised their overall records to 5-0 to mark the first time in school history that both programs achieved a combined 10 victories to start a season, as the Lyons swept New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponents Babson College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Saturday afternoon in Balfour Natatorium.

The men's team posted 171-100 and 150-128 finals over Babson and WPI, respectively, while the women's squad secured 172-86 and 170-116 victories over the Beavers and Engineers. WPI also defeated Babson, 155-133 on the men's side and 162-125 during the women's portion of the meet.

Wheaton's women turned in an all-around solid performance with eight individual event wins and a pair of relay victories. Sophomores Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) and first-year Casey Shanley (Rumson, NJ/Suffield Academy) led the field with two wins each. Miller bested the field in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, Pratt in the 200-yard free and 200-yard backstroke and Shanley in the 500- and 1000-yard free events.

Junior Colleen Smith (Milford, CT/Lauralton Hall) captured the 200-yard butterfly and freshman Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke. The winning 200-yard medley relay featured Miller, Smith, Glover and first-year Kelly Grant (South Salem, NY/John Jay), and the top 400-yard freestyle relay consisted of Miller, seniors Courtney Catalano (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) and Lauren Pcholinski (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) and junior Kristen Behrens (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge).

Junior All-American Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) and classmate Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) spearheaded the men's success with three event wins apiece. Roberts swept the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle events, while Hurley registered the top times in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events and 200-yard individual medley.

Sophomore Joe Fowler (Farmington, ME/Mount Blue) was credited with Wheaton's seventh individual win with the top mark in the 200-yard butterfly event. Fowler, Hurley, sophomore Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) and freshman T.J. Sponzo (Simsbury, CT/Avon Old Farms) combined for the win in the 200-yard medley relay, and Roberts, Sponzo, sophomore Ryan Patch (Lexington, MA/Lexington) and first-year Chris Romilly (Washington, DC/Saint Albans) won the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The Lyons will take close to a week away from competition and return to the pool on Friday when they host local opponent Bridgewater State College in a dual meet beginning at 6:00 p.m.
