MIT sweeps Lyons, Engineers hand women first loss of seasonDecember 10, 2004 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams suffered their first sweep of the year Friday, falling to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Balfour Natatorium. The Engineers edged the men, 153-132 and upended the women, 168-119. The men move to 4-2 with the loss, while the women, dropping their first meet of the season, fall to 5-1 overall. The men's team picked up nine individual wins, including multiple-event victories by senior diver Aaron Beaulieu (Freeport, ME/Freeport), sophomore co-captain Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) and freshman Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth). Beaulieu grabbed wins in the one- and three-meter diving competitions with scores of 198.08 and 212.70, respectively, while Roberts notched victories in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. He completed the 50-yard race in 21.70 and the 100-yard competition in 47.97. Jordan's 54.09 performance in the 100-yard backstroke set a new school record, while his 54.51 time in the 100-yard butterfly was also good for a Wheaton victory. Other Wheaton wins on the men's side came from senior co-captain Chris Klinkow (Hollis, NH/Hollis-Brookline), junior John Kuckens (West Hartford, CT/Hall) and freshman Joe Fowler (Farmington, ME/Mount Blue). Klinkow completed the 200-yard butterfly event in 2:04.77, while Kuckens turned in an impressive 4:59.72 time in the 500-yard freestyle. Fowler rounded out the Blue and White wins with a time of 10:37.49 in the 1000-yard freestyle. Freshman Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) set the pace for the women, grabbing two of the Lyons' three individual event wins on the night. Miller's 25.56 time in the 50-yard freestyle and 55.82 time in the 100-yard freestyle were both strong enough for Blue and White triumphs, while classmate Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) turned in the third individual win in the 100-yard butterfly event at 1:01.63. Both Miller and Pratt collected a pair of relay victories on the night as well, joining senior Blake Worrall (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and freshman Elizabeth McKay (Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional) to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:43.31. The first-year tandem also sided with senior Amanda Berthelette (Milford, NH/Milford) and sophomore Cassie Bohn (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) for a new school record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:55.64. The women return to Balfour Natatorium on Saturday, December 11 for a home meet versus Smith College at noon, while both the men and women resume action on Saturday, January 8 against the Coast Guard Academy and Wellesley College. That home meet is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 2/21/07. |
