Wheaton swimmers break six school records, post pair of third place marks at Camel Invitational

NEW LONDON, CT- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the Camel Invitational held at Connecticut College on Saturday and Sunday, breaking a total of six school records en route to a pair of third place finishes.

The men's squad recorded 333 points in the four-team field, while the women's team captured 348 points in the five-team event. New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) school Springfield College was the overall winner on the men's side with 832 points, while Connecticut College won the women's meet with 740 points.

The women were led by standout freshman Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose), whose school record time of 1:00.71 in the 100-yard butterfly notched the Lyons' sole first place finish. Pratt also recorded program marks of 27.85 in the 50-yard fly and 55.74 in the 100-yard freestyle events.

Other strong performances included a second place showing from senior Amanda Berthelette (Milford, NH/Milford) in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 29.88, while the quartet of Berthelette, Pratt, sophomore Cassie Bohn (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) and freshman Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) earned second place in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:57.21.

The men's squad also totaled three school records in the two-day event, led by first-year Joe Fowler (Farmington, ME/Mount Blue), who broke Wheaton's 400-yard individual medley record in 4:27.08 while setting another school mark in the 1650-yard freestyle in 17:35.01. Fellow freshman Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) was the meet's top finisher in the 50-yard backstroke in 25.91. He also placed second overall in the 100-yard back with a time of 54.56.

Sophomore co-captain Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.38 and 100-yard free in 48.19. Roberts, Jordan, senior co-captain Chris Klinkow (Hollis, NH/Hollis-Brookline) and sophomore Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) turned in a school record-breaking performance in the 400-yard medley relay, finishing second overall in 3:41.24. The foursome also recorded second place in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:39.63.

The Lyons return to Balfour Natatorium on Friday, December 10 for a dual meet with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at 6:00 p.m.
