Lyons sweep Gordon in men's and women's swimming season openerNovember 5, 2004 WENHAM, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept host Gordon College Friday night in the Lyons' first dual meet of the 2004-05 season. The men were victorious, 131-105, while the women recorded an impressive 179-75 triumph. The women posted all 12 individual event wins and two relay victories, led by multiple-event victories from sophomores Kelly Allinson (Portsmouth, NH/Portsmouth) and Cassie Bohn (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa). Allinson headed the field in the 100-yard breaststroke and 500-yard freestyle events in 1:18.50 and 5:50.96, respectively, while Bohn tallied wins in the 50-yard butterfly in 31.52 and 200-yard free in 2:08.29. Notching the top finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, Allinson and Bohn teamed up with junior Lauren Pcholinski (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) and first-year Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) for a winning time of 3:57.16. Pratt also placed first in the 100-yard fly in 1:03.52. Other victories for the women's team included seniors Blake Worrall (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and Flora McVay (Tottenville, NY/Curtis) in the 100- and 1000-yard freestyle events, respectively, juniors Stephanie Abbati (Branford, CT/Branford) and Christiana Kuipers (Andover, MA/Andover) in the 50-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley, respectively, sophomores Kristen Behrens (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and Colleen Smith (Milford, CT/Lauralton Hall) in the 50-yard free and backstroke events, respectively and freshman Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) in the 100-yard back. Behrens and Pratt also sided with senior Amanda Berthelette (Milford, NH/Milford) and freshman Elizabeth McKay (Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional) to win the 200-yard medley relay. In men's action, the Lyons sealed victories in nine individual events and both relays. Sophomore co-captain Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) won three events, while freshmen Joe Fowler (Farmington, ME/Mount Blue) and Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) picked up two individual wins each. Roberts led the field in the 50-yard backstroke in 27.90, 50-yard freestyle in 22.48 and 200-yard free in 1:54.44. Jordan was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard free events, while Fowler turned in top times in the 100-yard back and 200-yard individual medley. Senior co-captain Chris Klinkow (Hollis, NH/Hollis-Brookline) and junior John Kuckens (West Hartford, CT/Hall) rounded out the individual wins with top times in the 50-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle events, respectively. In the 200-yard medley relay, Fowler, Jordan and Kuckens sided with freshman Yunuscan Tokcan (Providence, RI/Northfield Mount Hermon) to edge out the Fighting Scots' team by a tenth of a second with a time of 1:50.52. Klinkow and Roberts also teamed up with sophomore Zach Hicks (Bath, ME/Morse) and freshman Ryan Patch (Lexington, MA/Lexington) to take the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Lyons open their home slate on Saturday, November 6 at Balfour Natatorium for the Charlie Batterman Relays.
