Lyons conclude regular season at non-scoring Middlebury InvitationalFebruary 9, 2008 MIDDLEBURY, VT- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up their regular season Saturday afternoon at the non-scoring Middlebury College Invitational. New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and non-league foes Tufts University and Williams College also competed. The women posted 11 top-five finishes, with Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) once again leading the charge, as the senior co-captain contributed to four runner-up marks and a fourth-place result. Pratt took second in each the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly events and fourth in the 200-yard backstroke race. Pratt's time of 24.89 in the 50 free was 0.02 seconds shy of first. She also swam leadoff legs in the 200-yard freestyle and medley relay events. During the 200 free relay that finished less than a second off the top mark, Pratt was joined by senior co-captain Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and freshmen Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional). Piscetta, Pratt, Zais and sophomore Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) comprised the 200-yard medley relay quartet. Piscetta also broke the program's oldest record of 11 years, swimming the 100-yard individual medley in 1:04.77. Sophomore Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) posted Wheaton's lone third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke. Piscetta claimed fourth in the 100-yard butterfly, as did Sweatt in the 100-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Stephanie Conelias (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) placed fourth in the 200-yard breast, while junior Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) and freshman Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) each captured fifth in the 100-yard back and free events, respectively. Senior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) led the men's team with a runner-up placement in the 100-yard backstroke, while freshman Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John's Prep) rounded out the top-five finishes with a fourth-place mark in the 200-yard butterfly. Jordan also swam leadoff legs in the 200-yard medley and freestyle relays, which finished sixth and tied for sixth, respectively. In addition to Jordan, the relay teams consisted of senior Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) and freshmen Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, CT/Xavier) and Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro). The Lyons move into the championship portion of their season later this month, with the women heading to Wellesley College on February 22 for the start of their three-day NEWMAC meet. The men's conference championship begins a week later on February 29 at MIT. Each meet begins on a Friday at 11:00 a.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 2/11/08. |
