Women's swimming breaks victories record for fourth straight season, Lyons sweep while men split against NESCAC competitionFebruary 2, 2008 NORTON, MA- For the fourth straight season, the Wheaton College women's swimming and diving team eclipsed the program record for victories, as the Lyons swept Bates College, 189-108 and Tufts University, 167-131 on Saturday in Balfour Natatorium and upped their record to 16-3. The 7-10 Blue and White men split the double-dual meet, also downing the Bobcats, 155-89 but falling to the Jumbos, 197-93. Tufts' men and women each knocked off Bates, 238-41 and 175-120, respectively. One school record and a near miss of another highlighted the meet for the women, who broke the 2006-07 team's mark of 14 victories. In the final event of the competition, the 400-yard freestyle relay, seniors Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) and freshmen Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) combined to win in a time of 3:40.53, bettering a year-old program standard by 0.30 seconds. Piscetta came out on top during the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.46, but it was her second-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.69 that fell just 0.07 seconds short of a nine-year-old Wheaton record. Pratt emerged victorious in each the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, clocking in at 24.60 and 54.20, respectively, as she fell 0.14 ticks shy of a provisional qualification time for the NCAA Championship in the 50-yard free. Zais anchored the winning 200-yard medley relay team, which finished in 1:52.94, as she was joined by sophomores Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) and freshman Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial). Sweatt came out on top in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes, swimming to the wall in times of 1:09.38 and 2:32.62, respectively, while freshman Sara Hollar (La Crescenta, CA/Flintridge Prep) had one of Wheaton's eight event triumphs, taking the 200-yard butterfly in 2:19.74. Seniors Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) and Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) led the men's squad by winning a pair of individual events apiece and each swimming legs for the top 200-yard medley relay quartet. Hurley corralled the top spot during the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.29 and paced the 200-yard breast field in 2:24.15. Jordan bested all 100-yard backstroke competitors at 53.16 while also winning the 100-yard freestyle in 49.34. For the 200-yard medley relay, Hurley and Jordan joined freshmen Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, CT/Xavier) and Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) for a time of 1:41.19. First-year Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John's Prep) rounded out Wheaton's six event victories by topping the 200-yard butterfly in 2:05.55. With each team's dual meet slate complete, the Lyons turn their attention toward next Saturday's Middlebury College Invitational, which begins at 1:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
