Wheaton women reach program wins record with sweep of Bentley and Bridgewater State, men split double-dual meet

January 29, 2008

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's swimming and diving team matched a program record for wins Tuesday night, as the Lyons picked up their 13th and 14th victories with triumphs over Division II Bentley College, 160-138 and local foe Bridgewater State College, 224-69 in Balfour Natatorium. The women established program win marks in each of the previous three seasons. The men split with the Bears and Falcons, defeating Bridgewater State, 155-95 while falling to Bentley, 185-88.

The women, who have been victorious in 10 of their last 11 decisions, snapped Bentley's nine-meet winning streak. The Lyons improved to 14-3 overall and are on the verge of tallying the most victories in the program's 17-year history. The men are now 6-9 overall. Bentley's men's and women's teams, now 9-3 and 11-3, respectively, swept Bridgewater State, 233-46 and 196-95. The Bear men slipped to 1-7, while the women fell to 7-4.

Senior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) captured multiple event victories in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events and 50-yard butterfly race. Her time of 24.54 in the 50-yard free was 0.08 shy of an NCAA Championship provisional qualifier, while her finish of 27.20 in the 50 fly broke her own year-old program record by 0.18 seconds.

Sophomore Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) swept the 50- and 200-yard breaststroke events, while classmate Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) rounded out Wheaton's seven individual event wins. Meehan topped the field in the 50-yard backstroke, and Piscetta finished first in the 200-yard freestyle.

The Lyons also were first during the 400-yard freestyle relay, as senior Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury), junior Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) and freshmen Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) comprised the winning quartet.

Senior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) paced the Lyon men by contributing to three event triumphs, finishing first in the 50-yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle races while leading off for the victorious 400-yard medley relay team.

Joining Jordan on the 400-yard medley relay was senior Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) and first-year athletes Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) and Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, CT/Xavier). Classmate Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John's Prep) secured the top mark in the 200-yard butterfly.

The Wheaton squads compete in their final home meet of the season Saturday afternoon, hosting New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foes Bates College and Tufts University in double-dual action starting at 1:00 p.m.
