November 17, 2007

SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell at New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) heavyweight Springfield College on Saturday in Linkletter Natatorium. The Lyons women were edged by the seven-time defending league champion, 165-135, while Wheaton's men lost to the Pride, 158-99.

Freshman Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) turned in a pair of individual victories for the women, besting the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle fields in times of 1:01.38 and 2:01.15, respectively. Senior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) won the 100-yard free event in 54.68 and helped the 400-yard medley relay quartet to victory, combining with classmate Meg Miller (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and sophomores Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) for a time of 4:11.76.

Piscetta nearly won a third race, placing second in the 50-yard butterfly by 0.15 seconds. Pratt was second in the 50-yard freestyle by just 0.07 ticks, while Meehan, Sweatt and sophomore Sarah Houlihan (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) each turned in a pair of runner-up showings. Miller, Piscetta, Pratt and freshman Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) swam for the second-place 400-yard free relay foursome.

Senior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) won twice for the men, pacing the 50- and 100-yard backstroke fields with times of 25.55 and 57.39, respectively. Jordan also helped a pair of relays to runner-up finishes. He swam leadoff for the 400-yard medley relay team, joining classmate Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) and freshmen Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) and Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John's Prep). Jordan anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay quartet, combining with Hurley and freshmen Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, CT/Xavier) and Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro).

Fichman-Klein and Hurley each recorded a pair of second-place finishes during individual action, Dean-Lee was runner up in the 1,000-yard freestyle, and Gillie missed first place during the 400-yard individual medley by a mere 0.02 seconds.

The Lyon squads have nearly two weeks of rest from competition before returning to the pool at the two-day Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Invitational, which begins on Friday, November 30 at 6:30 p.m.
