Lyons take part in double-dual competition against Coast Guard and NYU

November 10, 2007

MANHATTAN, NY- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams ran up against swimming powers New York University and United States Coast Guard Academy Saturday afternoon at the Palladium Athletic Facility in Manhattan.

The Lyon women split their outcomes, knocking off New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Coast Guard, 190.5-107.5 before falling to the host Violets, 220-80, as Wheaton is now 4-1 on the season. The men were swept by the Bears, 249-35 and NYU, 217-61, leaving their season mark at 2-3.

A trio of event winners paced the women, as sophomore Stephanie Conelias (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) was the top finisher in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:22.81, freshman Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) captured the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:34.47, while classmate Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) was victorious in the 100-yard freestyle in 55.90.

Piscetta also joined sophomores Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) and freshman Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) on the runner-up 200-yard medley relay team. Piscetta took second in the 100-yard butterfly, as did Sweatt in the 100-yard breaststroke.

On the men's side, senior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) finished second in the 100-yard backstroke and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle. Classmate Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) also took fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The men's 200-yard medley relay also secured a fifth-place mark, as Hurley, Jordan and freshmen Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) and Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, CT/Xavier) were under a second shy of a Coast Guard foursome.

Wheaton remains on the road one week from today for a dual meet at conference power Springfield College at 1:00 p.m. The Pride women have won the last seven NEWMAC crowns.
