Lyons open seasons with double-dual victories over Gordon and WPIOctober 27, 2007 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their 2007-08 campaigns with two wins apiece on Saturday at Balfour Natatorium in a double-dual meet with Gordon College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). The Lyon men downed Gordon, 182-49 and WPI, 141-129, while the women defeated the Fighting Scots, 179-45 and the Engineers, 174-109. WPI's men and women both beat Gordon, 196-45 and 201-68, respectively. Twelve victories went to the Wheaton women out of the 13 swimming events in which a Lyon competed. Freshman Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) won a team-high three individual events, topping the 100- and 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly competitions, while joining senior Abby Pratt (Melrose, MA/Melrose) and classmates Stephany Perkins (Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) on the victorious 200-yard medley relay team. Pratt won the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke before anchoring the fastest 400-yard freestyle relay foursome, combining with junior Kelly Grant (South Salem, NJ/John Jay), sophomore Sarah Houlihan (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield) and freshman Hayley Golden (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta). Houlihan was tops in the 1,000-yard freestyle, and Perkins won the 200-yard breaststroke. Additional winners included sophomores Aurelie Marcotte (Hampden, MA/Minnechaug Regional) and Emily Sweatt (Portland, ME/Deering) in the 100-yard backstroke and breaststroke races, respectively, and freshman Alisha Wilson (Cumberland, ME/Greely) in the 200-yard individual medley. On the men's side, senior Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) won individual events for three different 100-yard strokes, topping the backstroke, butterfly and freestyle races. He also swam leadoff for the quickest 200-yard medley relay quartet, joining classmate Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) and freshmen Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) and Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro). During his first meet since the 2005-06 campaign, Hurley also won the 200-yard breaststroke competition, while freshman Jonathan Gold (West Harrison, NY/Fordham Prep) finished atop the one-meter diving field. Classmate Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John's Prep) paced all 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle racers.
