Wheaton's December contest against MIT and Smith selected as SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Dual Meet of the Week

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's swimming and diving team's meet on December 8 against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foes Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Smith College in Balfour Natatorium was one of just 15 meets across the NCAA's three divisions selected as SwimmingWorldMagazine.com's Dual Meet of the Week during the fall semester.

After a successful inaugural year of coverage during the 2006-07 season, SwimmingWorldMagazine.com begins its second campaign promoting the dual meet of the week by producing a meet preview and recap each week to help increase the amount of exposure for that contest. The organization announced its fall schedule earlier this month and will reveal its spring slate at the end of the first semester.

Scheduled as one of only four featured Division III meets during the fall, the Lyons, Engineers and Pioneers occupy the final dual-meet spot of the opening semester. Last season, the Wheaton women defeated MIT for the first time since the 1993-94 season and second time in the 16-year history of the program. Last December's outcome came down to the final event, with the Lyons prevailing by a 151-148 score. Wheaton downed Smith, 204-93, while MIT posted a 228-72 victory over the Pioneers. The Engineers downed the Lyons, 159-96 on the men's side.

The Lyon women are coming off a season in which they set a program wins mark with a 14-4 record while matching their highest placement of fourth at the NEWMAC meet, shattering 16 school records and sending their first athlete to a national championship. The men captured their best team finish at the NCAA Championship in 29th after finishing the regular season at 5-11 with a seventh-place mark as hosts of the conference championship.

Fifth-year head coach Jean-Paul Gowdy leads his 2007-08 teams into action beginning with a late October double-dual meet against Gordon College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). On Saturday, October 27, the Lyons welcome the teams for a 1:00 p.m. start in Balfour Natatorium.
