Roberts awarded academic all-district honors for second straight yearMay 24, 2007
Roberts, who completed the most decorated career in the 16-year history of Wheaton's men's swimming and diving program, achieved a 3.72 grade-point average through the fall semester while pursuing a double major in economics and political science. Voted Wheaton's Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year, the three-year captain garnered All-America swimming laurels during his fourth straight trip to an NCAA Division III Championship. Finishing with his highest career placements of fourth in each the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events during the 2007 national championship, Roberts upped his All-America total to six. By reaching two New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference qualifications in Balfour Natatorium in February, Roberts completed his career with eight all-league honors. The current school record holder in four individual events, all of which he broke this past winter, he is also a member of four relay marks. By winning the 50-yard freestyle at this year's NEWMAC Championship, Roberts became the only athlete in league history to win the same swimming event at the conference meet four different times. Of the 31 individual events he entered in dual meets during the regular season, he won 27 of them while finishing second three times. In addition to his NCAA and NEWMAC athletic awards, Roberts earned NEWMAC Academic All-Conference accolades for the third time in his career this spring, which requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50. As a junior, Roberts was named to the academic all-district second team and helped the Lyons win a program-record 11 dual meets before being voted NEWMAC Swimmer of the Year. He is also a two-time College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) All-Academic honoree. The District I College Division consists of all non-NCAA Division I colleges and universities in the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont, and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Quebec. To be nominated for the Academic-All America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, possess at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
